Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

  • Sold by private insurance companies and labeled Plans A through N.

  • Monthly premium varies depending on the plan, carrier, and your state.

  • Prescription drug coverage must be purchased separately (Part D).

Original Medicare (Parts A & B)

Part A – Hospital Insurance

  • Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and some home health care.

  • $0 monthly premium if you worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters.

  • Deductibles and coinsurance may apply.

Part B – Medical Insurance

  • Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.

  • Standard monthly premium in 2024: $174.70 (may be higher depending on income).

  • After meeting your deductible, you usually pay 20% of Medicare-approved costs.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)
  • Combines Parts A and B, and most plans include prescription drug coverage (Part D).

  • Fixed copays for hospital and medical services.

  • Has an annual out-of-pocket maximum to protect you from high costs.

  • May offer extra benefits Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as vision, dental, or hearing.
